Energetic Communication

Energetic Communication

Ever since picking up the neuroscience bug some 10 years ago I have been talking to my clients about the importance of understanding energy.

I don’t mean simply in terms of our capacity to sustain activity but also as a fundamental communication mechanism between human beings. This is rarely discussed explicitly in psychology but the truth is that our hearts are able to communicate directly in the electro-magnetic domain without any involvement of the conscious brain. It’s as though our hearts tune in to their own network but our conscious brains (fundamentally the cortex) do not have the passwords to dial in to the same conversation. The human heart transmits an electromagnetic field to around at least 5 feet outside its body. When our hearts are in close proximity, appropriate sensing equipment can show the direct impact of our heart rhythms on each other. We have experienced this for ourselves. It is likely that we have all been in situations where we can directly feel somebody else’s energy dragging us down, making us anxious or inspiring us. Of course, our thinking brain comes in afterwards (literally milli-seconds later) to try to make sense of the sensation that is going on in our body but it is crucial to understand that the energetic effect has already taken place and our mental processes can only mediate these sensations and not prevent them happening in the first case. The stronger source of energy will typically impact the weaker source. Hence, for example, remaining calm is essential in dealing with anxious people.

And what a wonderful example of this I came across in the press last week! A mother had recently given birth to a healthy baby but the strain of the birth had exposed a cardiac weakness in the mother and within a few months of the birth the mother had suffered a heart attack. She was in a very poor state and was being considered for heart transplant surgery. She was on a life support system as her heart was incapable of looking after itself. At the father’s request, the 3 month old baby was brought into the mother’s room to lay alongside her. Within 3 hours, the mother’s heart started to beat normally! Mum is now well on the mend and no major surgery is anticipated.

This happened despite the mother’s incapacity and the baby not even having a sufficiently developed brain to support psychological interaction with the mother. This was a direct energetic linking of their hearts. Mothers and babies in the womb develop a deep bond on the basis of the baby’s experience of the mother’s heartbeat, in effect the baby’s first experience of life. I have previously come across examples where newly-born babies apparently have been brought back to life by being caressed by the mother but this is the first time I have seen it work the other way. In this case, it appears that the mother derived such comfort from the heartbeat of her child that she summoned the will and the intelligence to trigger her own cardiac recovery.

The world of inter-human energetic transaction is a huge gap in our current thinking, especially in the western world. It’s time we re-tuned to this deeper intelligence if we genuinely want to understand who we really are.

The Neuro Edge brings the complex world of neuroscience into everyday relevance.

For those engaged in leading, developing and supporting people in organisations, this book explains the inner workings of the brain and its role in determining our thoughts, feelings and instincts and examines the role of the heart and gut as part of our wider intelligence system.
