Introduction.

Make Sense Ltd’s unique coaching and facilitation model, the Butterfly Model, is underpinned by neuroscientific insights so bringing the whole person into the experience.

The process pushes people beyond thinking about a commitment to change to securing an emotional connection which is able to convince the brain to adopt new patterns of thinking.

It can be weaved in alongside any model you are choosing to use and gets away from just having a rational approach to coaching. It overlays the conversation and helps to engage all parts of the brain, as a result, engaging all types of different people – making change more sustainable.

This model can also be used to self-supervise or can form part of appraisal or feedback processes.

The Butterfly Model

Step 1 -Trust
Establishing trust is the key first step. We want to get people into a safe place so they will open up to us. Without this there is no coaching relationship.

Step 2 – Evidence
Once trust is established, we move people to a rational space. The collecting data phase.

Step 3 - Emotional Enquiry
Once we have the facts, we ask people to explore how they feel about something as they will only change if they feel differently. That is sustainable change, which is why training and imposition of rules doesn’t often work.

Step 4 – Reflection
When we have emotional flow, we move on to a space where the person can look at all data and insights together to establish patterns.

Step 5 – Breakthrough (or decision)
This is the most difficult step. This is where the value lies. Where change is owned by the person
.

Step 6 – Action
Finally, we go back to the rational space to put the decisions into action.
